Guide: Curly and coily hair

Each curl pattern needs its own care. To respect how unique your hair is, you have to know it. There are many techniques, and learning to personalize for your type will upgrade your routine and your choices.

We recommend Natutrat S.O.S African Native Oils split-end repair for the best results.

Quickly: there are four hair types — oily, combination, normal, and dry. Inside those sit textures (straight, wavy, curly, coily) with their own internal properties, plus subdivisions such as curly 3A, 3B, or 3C.

Those labels help qualify the fiber: low volume, coarse, voluminous, easy to shape, silky, with or without frizz, and more.

We recommend Natutrat SOS Reconstruction curl activator for the best results.

Say your hair is curly, dry, voluminous, and 3B. First decide whether you want definition with volume or definition with controlled volume — that makes shampoo and conditioner easier to choose.

Next, treatments. With a dry-hair diagnosis and the fact that curly hair struggles to stay hydrated, look for a cream that absorbs nutrients well and emollient oils with a hydrating role.

We recommend Natutrat S.O.S Daily Care Intensive Maintenance 300ml for the best results.

After cleanse, condition, and hydrate comes finish. Watch how 3B holds through the day. Styling cream can keep hair defined and fuller as it dries; jelly defines and keeps strands more aligned for longer. You can also mix the two.

After that self-knowledge, you know what to treat (dry curls) and what to highlight (volume and definition), with more freedom and confidence when you buy. Keep updating the diagnosis: after chemical services you may need reconstruction, and after bleaching you may need to replace mass.

We recommend Keraform curl-revealing multifunctional cream for the best results.

3A: This hair is shiny with a straighter root, then curls form just after. The curls are large and wide.

3B: Curl starts at the root and the texture is usually coarser. Strands are fuller and curls are tighter.

3C: Curls are tighter and, like 3B, start at the root. This type dries out more than other type-3 hair, especially at the ends, so strands can be fine and fragile.

4A: Super-tight, well-defined coils — the curves are easy to see. Hair is drier and more fragile.

4B: Volume is the main trait. Coils sit closer together, which can make strands more fragile. Detangle carefully to avoid breakage and use styling creams with oils.

4C: This type is more irregular: some strands follow a zigzag, others have less coil definition. Shrinkage is strongest here, and it is the driest type, so it needs the most care.
